The NDIS is here

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is rolling out across Australia.  And it's arrived in Lismore, Ballina, Richmond Valley, Kyogle, Byron, Tweed & Clarence Valley in Northern NSW.  It started on 1 July 2017.

The scheme is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).  That's the agency that holds the funding for supports.  Also it employs the Local Area Co-ordinators  and other staff who manage the scheme.

About the NDIS

The NDIS provides support for people with a disability, their families and carers.  It's an insurance scheme that helps people who live with disability build skills and capability that will improve their lives.  It can help a person with disability:

  • Access mainstream services and supports like health, education, public housing and aged care.
  • Access community services and supports such as activities and services in the community.
  • Maintain informal support arrangements with family and friends who don't get paid for the support they offer.
  • Receive reasonable and necessary funded supports related to a person's disability so they can live an ordinary life and achieve their goals.
